ACD Systems

At Photokina ACD Systems introduced their latest incarnation ACDSee, their excellent image browser and organisation tool. Version five of ACDSee introduces several new features including a calendar view (search for images taken on a particular date), image grouping (assign categories to images) and improved interface customization. Also fixed in version 5 is lossless JPEG rotation! There seemed to be plenty of interest on the stand at the center of which was a good live demo of the product and new features.

Canon

Canon announced three new consumer level digital cameras; the four megapixel four times zoom PowerShot G3, the four megapixel three times zoom PowerShot S45 and the three megapixel two times zoom IXUS v³ (AKA. PowerShot S230 ELPH). On top of this Canon's biggest news of the show (and least well kept secret) was the EOS-1Ds, an eleven megapixel digital SLR based on the EOS-1D body and operating system. The EOS-1Ds has a full 35 mm frame eleven megapixel CMOS sensor, this means that Canon's new 24 - 70 mm lens produces the exact same field of view on the EOS-1Ds as it would on an EOS-1V film SLR.

Canon's stand was as we'd expected large, well designed and busy most of the time. The stand shots below were taken before opening hours, in the 'calm before the storm'. At the center of the consumer side of the stand was a McLaren Formula One car surrounded by Canon's consumer range allowing lots of hands on with the cameras. On the other side of the stand were EOS lenses and the EOS-1Ds being put through its paces in a regular cat-walk demo show.

Casio

A week before Photokina Casio announced a new five megapixel digital camera based on the QV-4000 body design and controls. The QV-5700 utilizes the new 1/1.8" five megapixel sensor which we have seen as an 'easy upgrade' to previous four megapixel models. Also fairly new and featuring in a big way on the stand were the Exilim series of very compact digital cameras.

Creo / Leaf

Creo came to Photokina with sevearl new products. The first was the latest version of their professional workflow software 'Leaf Capture V8', this product is used in a tethered environment with the Leaf medium format backs to capture edit and finalize images. Leaf had an on-stand demo / training area where up to two people could be taken through the process of shooting and working on images using Capture V8. The two Valeo medium format back products are the Valeo 6 (6 megapixel 36 x 24 mm CMOS sensor) and the Valeo 11 (11 megapixel 36 x 24 mm CCD sensor).

The second product was the major focus of their stand, the new 'Leaf Portable Power' system. This portable digital medium format solution comprises of a Valeo 6 or 11 back, a Digital Magazine which provides power and storage and a Compaq iPAQ PocketPC (which they were calling the Leaf DP-67) running their DP-67 software. This setup allows you to shoot digitally and portably as well as being able to view and organize images on the Digital Magazine from the iPAQ. The iPAQ's large bright screen makes it ideal to deliver a 'digital Polaroid' or share the shot with the model / client / art director in a big shoot scenario.
