Nikon

Another very busy stand, Nikon's chief draw is of course the newly-announced D2X, and there are plenty here for visitors to get their hands on - if they are prepared to brave the queues. The ever-popular D70 is also drawing the crowds, along with the stunning new AF-S 300mm F2.8G VR lens. The new additions to Nikon's ever-growing Coolpix range get their first public showing at Photokina; the lightweight, budget big zoom Coolpix 4800 and the tank-like 8 megapixel Coolpix 8800 and 4800 duo. UPDATE: Nikon has been demonstrating the wifi capabilites of the D2X using PTP over IP. We were impressed to see how seamlessley the system works, allowing fast and fuss-free browsing thumbnails of images on the camera over the wireless network the instant they were taken. The ability to use remote capture over wifi was also very cool. Perhaps even more impressive was the prototype of a compact Coolpix camera with the same wifi capabilities. The prototype uses a specially modified Coolpix 3100 and a combined wifi and flash storage CF card. Nikon sources suggested we can expect to see a Coolpix with built-in wifi being announced within 'months rather than years'.
