SanDisk
SanDisk had a variety of new products for this PMA. The Cruzer portable storage device features a sliding internal structure which holds an SD/MMC card at one end and a USB plug at the other. Engage the slider to the rear and insert the card, slide the lever to the center point and you can pocket the device, slide the lever to the front and the USB connector appears. A neat device which is essentially just a USB SD/MMC reader. Also in the reader/writer category is the new Dual-Slot ImageMate reader which has a very neat cable storage solution (as you can see in the picture below), it's available in either CF/SM, CF/SD/MMC or CF/MS flavours.
From a storage standpoint SanDisk had their new professional line of Ultra CompactFlash cards (128, 192, 245, 384 and 512 MB capacities) as well as the 1 GB CF Type I 'standard' card. Also on display was the largest current capacity SD and Memory Stick cards; 128 MB.

Sigma
Sigma were of course one of the stars of the show, thanks to their involvement with Foveon's X3 sensor the SD9 was one camera everyone wanted to get their hands on. We managed to do just that and had a long chat with both Sigma and Foveon staff about the camera, the sensor and the integration of the 'digital side' of the camera. What was interesting was the amount of detail and quality of finish in the camera's user-interface experience (the display, display controls and menu system).
As it turned out this was another Foveon development, there were lots of really nice touches: "Always ready" - careful use of buffering and process control means that the camera is ALWAYS ready to shoot no matter what mode or display state. "Histogram display / zoom" - the histogram display features separate red, green and blue channels and you can magnify the image in histogram mode, the histogram follows the magnified area. "Undelete" - a unique feature to appear on the SD9 is the ability to undelete the last image deleted, very useful if you accidentally delete that key shot while in the field. Menus - all the menus are logically laid out, fast and easy to understand.

SimpleTech
SimpleTech came to the show as the dark horse of the storage world. Many people don't think of SimpleTech as the first name in Flash storage but our own Compact Flash performance tests showed that their cards consistently outperform most major brand cards. One reason for this is the fact that SimpleTech's Type II CF cards (512 MB and 1 GB) use interleaved memory technology which vastly improves write speeds. Also new at SimpleTech was the Mini FlashLink flash card reader/writer available in a variety of flavours as well as their USB 1.1, USB 2.0 and FireWire SimpleDrive external storage solution (available up to 40 GB).
