Canon PowerShot SD960 IS / Digital IXUS 110 IS

12.1 megapixels | 2.8" screen | 28 – 112 mm (4×)

Stylish ultra compact with useful 28-112mm (equiv.) zoom range (4x), image stabilization and all the new toys common to the 2009 Ixus/Elph range (including 720p movie capture and Smart Auto) and a nice wide aspect ratio 2.8" screen. 12 megapixels is probably overkill for most users of this kind of camera, but Canon's Ixus/Elph range has an excellent track record for decent image quality and responsive, easy operation. The almost identical SD 970 IS (Ixus 990 IS) has a bigger (5x) zoom range but sacrifices the wide angle lens.

Opinion: i just bought this yesterday. I am an owner of a xti
dslr, and ive been an owner of the old sd870 and
sd800.
i gave my sd800 to my brother and the sd870 to my
mother so i decided to go shopping for a new digicam.
the reason i hopped on it was because it was a
wideangle + a ultracompact with HD movie capabilities!
IQ is comparable to the previous digcams ive had. I
didnt do any pixel peeping, but for me to say they are
comparable to my old cameras means i was not
disappointed

pros:
wide angle
720p HD movie capablility
very compact
wide screen on the back
digic 4
great IQ even though i thought 12mp might be much

Problems: cons:
noisy HD night shooting
blandish design
not a big fan of 12 mps in such a small sensor

Opinion: I bought it for me, but I wasn't too happy with the image quality, so I gave it away (as a gift to a relative, it is her first digital camera, so I'm sure she won't be pixelpeeping, she'll be using the camera for small prints).

I think HD video is just a gimmick since it's
1. noisy indoors
2. prone to highlight clipping (overexposure) in bright sunshine

A tip: buy SD880 (Ixus 870) instead. Better design, larger LCD and better photographs. No HD video tho'...Nothing's perfect

Problems: 1. noise and heavy noise reduction, even at low iso, the pixel density of 43 MP/cm2 is way too high
2. awkward design (it looks and feels like a swimmer waterproof camera, but it isn't)

Opinion: Looked interesting with the wide screen. Needed HD video to film child birth (videocamera not allowed). Looked good on paper but not in reality.

Problems: Not worth buying. Average photos, HD vide is not HD to me. Can slip out of hand, awkard design. Small sensor. Absolutely no need to buy this, wish I bought the cheaper IXUS 100is-same thing really. If you want the SD 960 is wait a while, the inevitable price drop is just around the corner.
