Manufacturer description: A worthy successor to the popular Canon EF 300mm f/2.8 IS, the all-new Canon EF 300mm f/2.8 IS II USM super telephoto lens is lightweight, weighing approximately 13% less than its predecessor, yet offers faster operation, improved image stabilization and superior optics. Incorporating Fluorite elements for improved image quality and reduced chromatic aberration plus a number of advanced coatings to minimize ghosting, flaring, and with a newly developed Fluorine coating that keeps soiling, smears and fingerprints to a minimum, the EF 300mm f/2.8 IS II USM is ready to deliver spectacular images in an instant. With a third Image Stabilization mode (Mode 3) that activates IS only when the shutter button is fully pressed, and giving the equivalent effect of a shutter speed four stops faster, the EF 300mm f/2.8 IS II USM allows for easy panning and is ideally positioned for professional action photography. The EF 300mm f/2.8 IS II USM also features a new security slot for wire-type security locks.

Opinion: I recently bumped from the 300mm 2.8 I to the II and am very happy with the upgrade. The I version is an amazing lens, probably one of the all time great telephotos - but the II is noticeably better. I'm not a gearhead so can't refer to charts or numbers, just my intuitive field experience with the glass. The improved image stabilization system allows for low light, hand held miracles and the focus, already razor sharp from the I, is just extraordinary. The catch is that this is still a 300mm; not a lot of power for the nature photography I do. But when I can get close to subjects - watch out!
Opinion: There are just no words to describe this lens. You wouldn't believe me if I went into a detailed review. As of this writing I own three 300mm 2.8 lenses. Canon IS WAS the best. Not now.
