Opinion: My parents own a Canon EOS 500D which they bought when it was pretty new on the market. They don't really know alot about photographing themselves, and neither did I before the last months.
I was lucky to be tought by a good photographer, and I used this camera for learning. I've actually learned so much that I'm not going to buy a rebel series meself. I've learned enough in these month to take the step over to the 60D, but enough of that. More about the 500D.

The size is nice, even though I like it a bit bigger. The screen is good quality, and the A-CMOS sensor takes great pictures, but with a little bit lack in quality due to the fact it is only 15 MP. This is not noticeable unless you print large images. It has nice placement of all needed buttons, such as ISO and AF.

The lens that came with the camera was the standard Canon EF-S 18-55 mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS. It's a pretty good lens, and with a little bit of editing in free software such as Picasa, the pictures are superb.

The only problem is, as in all Canon DSLR's in lower price, slow AF in Live View and Movie Mode. It's also quite noisy in these modes, but with a bit of practising MF becomes second (or third) nature.

Overall a great camera, too bad it's not in production anymore. Personally I like it better than the 550D because of the buttons ...

Problems: Slow and noisy AF in Live View and Movie Mode

Opinion: I had few dSLR cameras before I bought this one - Canon 300D and 20D. Both were pretty big and bulky.
Canon 500D is much smaller and lightweight camera. I like almost everything about it.
The battery life is amazing and its really fast auto focus even in low light conditions.
Ergonomic controls, but I really miss the wheel that I so got used to in 20D.

Problems: I though I would not use the new video recording capabilities in HD, but I see that I do use it. What I don't like about it, that the camera doesn't auto focus in movie shooting mode and you have to press the focus button manually which results in camera shake and the worst is that camera microphone records the focusing sound in output file!

But this is the only downside that I could find in this camera..

Opinion: Great consumer DSLR with more capability than its normal user will ever touch. It has a nice size, very usable ISO 6400, good but not great HD video mode, and realizes amazing resolution with the proper exposure and processing.

For the prices you can find now it is a great bargain. Put to use the live histogram, DOF preview, and a few other things its competitors were missing and work with the good basics of exposure and fundamentals of composition and you really don't need another APS camera.

Do get the 55-250mm lens bundled with the camera if you can, it is one of the gems of the Canon system and will cover all amateur/consumer photography use of that range indefinitely with amazing value for its performance.

Search my name at flickr for a demo I post for someone ISO 12800 photo on a very dark night with no noise reduction, it is more capable than many reviewers or posers will tell you. Have fun and don't blame the camera!

Opinion: guys and galls honoustly i "ve had Nikon for the last 15 yrs but now nikon does not offer a body with same specifications and dimensions so I traded my Nikon D40 for EOS 500D. Size and weight and operation and specs this camera is 5 stars but image quality out of the box I really struggle to get same results from 500D as I got from D40.
With everything default EOS is little soft little overexposed where D40 (yes) gave crisp sharp well exposed pics even with kit lens (see my pics in galllery)
I have to study and experiment , which is a lot of fun ,
with 500D to match my old D40 pics. I also have Tamron 10-24 EF mount which gives excellent results throughout

Problems: default kit images (settings all standard)are a little soft
but futher this is 6 out of 5 stars

Opinion: Having used another brand DSLR (Amateur Level) for
one and half years, I acquired the Canon EOS 500D
(US Model EOS Rebel T1i) based on a friend's
recommendation and reading a lot of reviews. The
whole camera including a medium zoom lens weighs
2/3 of the competitor and very easy to maneuver. It
does feel less sturdy dur to being less hefty. The Digic
4 processor is excellent and the full 1080 video
capability makes this model very cost effective. Have
took 300 pictures and so far very good results. Street
price is $795 on the west coast and online price is
about $100 cheaper. Recommended.

Problems: The manual is well organized but not detailed enough to
show all the features of the rich features set of this
model. The Canon EOS type II lens (for "DX" size CMOS)
have limited choice. I have to search on line to find more
powerful zoom lens and bought a powerful zoom
made by other lens manufacturer. However if I could
afford the prize of the "Full Size" Canon digital lens the
choice is almost "the sky is the limit".

Opinion: I use a Panasonic FZ50 which I think is a great camera. We also have a Panasonic TZ4 and we recently visited my daughter and her husband who had gotten a Canon 500D. Since both use an SD chip I shot a series of pictures using his Canon and our TZ4, expecting some excitement. Oddly, when we viewed the pictures later on the computer you could not tell which camera the chip had been in. Oh well. Son in law Mike is happy, which is what counts. I'll stick with the Panasonics until I see something better. Both of our Panasonics have exposure bracketing, even the cheap one, and HDR pictures are easy and fun, and startling to viewers unaccostomed to that kind of image. I'm sure the Canon will produce fine pictures once all the fine points are mastered. To be fair, in lower light the Canon makes great pictures, while the other cameras are struggling, but in good lighting conditions it is hard to tell. All cameras are getting so good, the differences are becoming subtle. Digital cameras are just fun.

Problems: Not my camera, but he loves it.

Opinion: Upgrading from an EOS 1000F I chose the 500D to move into the digital world.

I own the camera since two months and so far am very satisfied. I still do believe
that a 35 mm film camera is the best, but in today's world digital photography
definitely took over.

However it is absolutely necessary to buy high quality glasses in order to unlock the
camera's full potential, since the kit-lens is rather limited.

As far as build quality is concerned I think the camera is way underrated, as I have
taken the camera with on hikes through the alps and through some tough weather
conditions (snow, rain and heavy wind) and the camera resisted rather well.

Also I think that the grip is very comfortable for my hands and the material of the
grip feels very nice, however it is a bit shallow.

I also think that the menu and buttons are very well conceived and that the camera
is very feature rich.

Problems: None so far, except a slight tendency to over expose with the 18-55 IS kit lens.

Opinion: I am using the Camera now for more than 1 months moving from Nikon D80 which was of course more advanced than the T1I in all terms. However i still see the Rebel T1I a good camera.
Image Quality is good with only one problem , which is low details,, Image is exteremly plain with very poor details
