18.0 megapixels | 3" screen | APS-C sensor

The 550D uses a new, 18.7 (total) megapixel sensor that's similar, but not exactly the same as the one featured in the EOS 7D. Also central to the impressive specification of the EOS 550D is a high-spec movie mode which offers full HD capture at up to 30 fps, manual control over exposure, and the option to use an external stereo microphone. The new camera also inherits the EOS 7D's sophisticated metering system. Canon has pulled out all the stops with the EOS 550D and produced the most highly-specced Rebel we've ever seen.

Opinion: Bought this camera for photos AND video. Photos are ok. Nothing to complain about. However no significant step over 500D.
Video is very disappointing. FullHD is pretty soft and 720p is even softer and suffers from jaggies. I tested several lenses which are ok and the videos are always very soft. Focus is no problem, but this camera isn´t able to record sharp videos.
I bought this camera also because of the video feature and it is just disappointing.
Even cheap camcorders are better.

Problems: If you want to buy this camera because of video, you will be disappointed. Get an cheap camcorder instead.

Opinion: I sold my Canon 350D and I wanted a camera to help me in my passion, the astrophotography. because the price of the 550D was too big for me, I bought a Pentax Kr. The front focus problem and the inconsistency of the AF system made me to send it back and to ask my money back. Adding some extra money, I choose the Canon 550D. The camera is far better than the Kr. It is a real photo camera not a toy like the Pentax's Kr.
The AF system is accurate and rapid, the low light capabilities are amazing. Good sensor, good high ISOs. Extraordinary video modes, especially (for me) the crop movie mode, which allows me to capture very usefull astro videoclips.

Problems: No. All is where it must be.

Opinion: Not so good EOS 550D. Be careful.

I just looked at the review of the Canon EOS 550D camera where dpreview list that
the camera has a Raw image format, in fact two Raw settings.

NOT SO!!!! It seems that’s what Canon want you to think.

What you actually get is a badly Jpeged image, IT IS NOT RAW. This seems to
be a blatant lie or is a least deceptive, there is no way you can get a raw image off
the 550D. Canon’s own literature (if you can find it) will tell you all image settings
are set to Jpeg as the camera’s default - Canon states on a hard to find PDF
document (and not anywhere in the EOS 550D camera instruction manual): ‘The
camera’s factory default configuration is set to deliver immediately-usable JPEG
images without need for additional menu settings. Picture Style presets applied to a
RAW image can be revised with Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software.’.
‘Revised’, what does that mean? It doesn’t mean you can get a Raw image.

If you set the camera to Raw and look at a supposed Raw image in Digital Photo
Professional it will be labeled as Raw and will have the file extension .CS4. From my
experience this is utter bull shit. When you take it into Photoshop you will see that
what you end up with is a Tiff file that has been through a Jpeg process (or
probably more correctly, a Jpeg image converted into a Tiff file which had a .CS4
extension to make it look like it was a Raw image, but then again how do you know
what has happened). The Tiff image is so badly Jpeged that you will get a better
image quality with the camera set at the highest level Jpeg.

If anyone can tell me how I can get a Raw image, a genuine, unaffected image that
came straight off the sensor in a format that Photoshop can read, I will be all ears.
Please, please, prove me wrong. I bought an EOS 550D just a few days ago and will
be returning it for a refund.

The rest of the camera seems fine.

David

Problems: Be careful, from what I can tell, and nobody else has shown me otherwise, there is no
accessible Raw images available from a Canon EOS 550D camera, only Jpeg. The Raw
camera setting is bogus. Maybe there is a plug in or an update coming that will
change that.
