One of the grand old names in film photography, the Contax brand started life as the name of a camera range produced by Zeiss Ikon before being licensed to the Japanese company Yashica (later Kyocera Yashica) in 1973. Renowned for the quality of its Zeiss lenses, the Contax film camera range of 35mm system and compact cameras was popular with high end enthusiasts until production ceased in the early 21st century. Although several Contax digital cameras were produced, they failed to achieve much success and production was halted in 2005.
Kyocera produced just a handful of stylish, expensive but unremarkable Contax digital compacts, and of these only the TVS digital (2002) showed any hint of the brand’s half- century legacy.
