10.2 megapixels | 2.7" screen | 32 – 96 mm (3×)

Fujifilm's budget 'A' series cameras have got a lot more stylish - and a lot slimmer - in recent years, but the basic feature set remains just that; basic. The budget Fujifilm A170 is based around a 10MP sensor, 3x (32-96mm equiv) zoom lens and a 2.7 inch LCD. There are 16 scene modes, Auto Scene Recognition and a Panorama mode. Remarkably thin at 21.9 mm, the new 10 megapixel model is available with a high gloss-double coated veneer finish.

Opinion: The 10.2MP FinePix A170 is a FinePix model -but without the FinePix series name
used.

SR Auto recognizes what scene you want to capture and chooses the most suitable
scene mode. Fuji's face detection is also included for recognizing faces.

Scene modes include:
• Panorama
• Landscape
• Sport
• Night
• Fireworks
• Sunset
• Snow
• Beach
• Museum
• Party
• Flower
• Text
• Baby
• Anti-blur
• Natural light

One impressive feature is the A170's panorma scene mode-take 3 overlapping
images and it will stitch these togther in-camera.
Image quality is fine for 10.2MP.
Also continuous shooting is available-unlike the FinePix Z3, the A170 only has top 3
available.

Opinion: An inexpensive camera that fits into the shirt pocket instead of collecting dust at home. As an ex- studio photographer, mainly shooting on Ektachrome 4x5 to 8x10, I now enjoy my retirement without that luggage and this little thing just does a perfect point and shoot job.

Problems: none

Opinion: This little wonder cost me AU$99 in a KMart store in Sydney. For the money it represents remarkable value. It appears quite well built, is easy to hold and easy to use. The user can control ISO, exposure compensation, macro, flash, timer, 3x zoom, movie mode, display options and quality level ( jpg only). Focus time is average for a compact with no lag time if prefocussed. All the several hundred pix I have made thus far are correctly focussed and exposed. All show very decent image quality with just a bit of softness and purple fringing in the corners at the shortest focal length. Overall image quality is surprisingly good with quite good DR and resolution. A4 prints come up very nicely. A real winner in the value for money department. I dont know how they get such decent quality on the market so cheap.

Problems: None really but there are two issues.
First alkaline batteries are consumed quickly so a set of rechargable NiMh AA batteries and charger are worthwhile.
Second there is visible digital noise even at ISO 100 with JPG artefacts. ISO 200 is OK and 400 occasionally acceptable with lots of chroma noise and watercolor effect. I can't help thinking the camera would be better served by less pixels and less noise.
