Opinion: This is the worst camera in the universe. I play around with cellphone cameras these days and a 1.3mp Nokia 6230i takes much better pictures than this 1.3mp HP. It has more noise and less color depth that the phone camera and it consumes batteries at an unbelievable rate. The constuction is poor and the LCD has a lot of dead pixels. I am very happy that my HP was stollen after I had it for 2 years. After that I got a Canon A40, my first REAL digital camera. Never buy HP cameras - rather buy a nice phone with a built-in camera or a camera from a real optics manufacturer.
Problems: Fast battery consumption.
Edges blurred.
High noise in pictures.
Poor color reproduction.
Beaten by most phone cameras.
Opinion: Interesting camera. I've had this camera for a few years now. Bought it at Wal Mart on sale (I don't remember the purchase price). The camera takes good pictures but is rather tempermental. Eats batteries, and sometimes, the camera will not turn-on. The problem with making an unreliable entry level camera is, when people are ready to upgrade the tend to look to OTHER camera makers (hp should keep this in mind)!
Problems: 1. Does not turn on sometimes.
2. Eats batteries at a ridiculous rate.
Opinion: I had this camera 2.5 years, then I have bought a Canon A60 (this was a redemption).
- Excellent menu, perfect for beginners
- Very compact: "just turn on and shoot" :)
- Acceptable camera for family memories (if you dont want to develop pictures)
Problems: - Very poor colors
- Usually poor image quality (sometimes (randomly) can create very good pictures). I think this cam makes better pictures than "noname" cameras (Trust, Aiptec etc.)
- Very slow turn-on (more than 10 s)
- Needed very good batteries and charger (I could shot about 150 pictures with 4x1800MAh batteries)
Sure thing: I will never buy any HP cameras!
Opinion: Fix for PS215 does nor store to CF after seeming to take picture. I have had the HP Photo Smart 215 since April 2001. Although I have had all the problems with short battery life, slow start up, slow to take a picture and downloads on the USB only works sometimes etc., I have managed to take quite a lot of good pictures. A year ago I got a good set of NiMH Acuumulators (RadioSchack 1300mAh) with charger for 50 $AU. These were recommended by a Tandy salesman in Australia. Since then I got 120+ pictures on one charge - a great improvements over Duracells which lasted 25 pictures only if in one session.
Problems: Problem 1:
215 does nor store to CF after seeming to take picture.
Solution:
Go to the secret Administrative Mode by switching to Preview Mode and while holding down the shutter button press the scroll wheel for some seconds. Scroll down to "Take Preferences" (past the bottom of the screen) and make sure that "Dont Save Pic" is not selected. (It was not selected on mine). Nevertheless select it briefly and then deselect it. After that my camera saves pictures to CF again.
This problem started in July 2003 (the german guarantee expired in April) the camera acts as if it takes pictures, but does not write to the CF (32MB) at all. The counter does not advance and the preview says there are no pictures on the CF.
Makes you wonder that it failed shortly after the guarantee expired and there is firmware involved which has access to the date - and it can be fixed by accessing a menu normally only accessible to the manufacturer ??? (see fix above).
Problem 2:
Communication failure when attempting to download via USB
Solution:
For downloading I use a trick. I noticed that I got "Communicitaion failure" mostly in hot weather. I put the camera in the fridge for half an hour and downloads nearly always work.!!!
My PS215, F/W V1.68b, H/W AL8131
Good luck with your camera

Opinion: This was my first digital camera a couple of years ago. I was looking for a inexpensive digital camera with a lcd and my choice stopped on this one.
The first day I openned the box, I put the 4 new AA batteries took about 20 pictures, ... batteries were dead! The manufactur said DON'T us rechargable batteries, but at this rate of consumption, I would spend $$$... on alkaline batteries. I decided to use rechargable anyway (not a good idea!, I don't know!). With 8 nimh rechargable batteries, I could shoot up to 150 pictures turning on the LCD times to times. It is not good compared to more expensive and more recent but still worth it.
Now, for the picture quality is for me not acceptable at the first time, but after comparing with similar models from other brand, it is not so bad. YES, all the pictures need retouch, but the colors are nice after that. See some of my best shots over 10000+ shots taken at http://www.pbase.com/tedlegrand.
Of course, there is not much features apart from a digital zoom and red eye reduction, but it is not a professional camera.
Finally, after several new camera that broked, I purchased a canon s200 (uncomparable) and then A70. Now that I am well informed, I found canon did the best cameras. No more HP for me
Problems: The main point to consider is how long you whish to keep this camera? I had 3 new hp c215 in 3 years and each of them were unusable after one year of usage. The thing just stops functionning. It fires up, LCD works, but no pictures are recorded on CF card and it is not the card fault!
Could be because I used rechargable batteries!
Could be because I used the delete feature from the PC software to delete pictures on my camera! I found issues on this a while ago.
Opinion: Well, if you don't pay a big amont of money for a digital camera, don't expect superior quality! That's the case with HP 215.
This camera is big and heavy (especially when you put 4 batteries in it).I'm afraid you've read it millions of times, but this camera is real battery killer.I use rechargeable ones instead and it works fine. The menu is extremely easy to navigate and 10 sec. timer and Macro mode are really good features. Optical viewfinder is not worth to trust, especially in short distances. I always use LCD. Image quality is often grainy and the light balance is bad. 4 MB Compact Flash card is real absurd, you can store just 7 high resolution images.
Problems: 1. Battery life (you can use rechargeables)
2. Paralax effect when using optical viewfinder
Opinion: It's use less and a serius pice of JUNK. It's eating batery's like i drink beer. The Small 4MB CF card, is use less to! 7 Pic's and it's full. SUCKS!
Another write: hp 215 suport only up to 32 mb compact flash cards.
I have used my with at 48MB CF card, witout troubles.
But it eat's batery's like you drink beer......
I have tryed with 1800MAh rechargebale batery's, and Duracell, but it won't work better even.
Won't turn on most times. I Send my to repair, and get a new, but it's the same. DON'T BUY ONE!
Problems: Everything!........
Opinion: hp 215 was a superior camera of year 2002.now is also superior, but little bit slow / 10 second need to save a shot / but without any big problem.is so called press and shot cameras.
makro is very excelent.from 10 cm to 1 meter.with resolution 960 * 1280 dpi.look may page with few wallpapers http://freeweb.siol.net/svagel/wallpaper.html
with rechargebale baterias 1800 map fuul rechargebale is possible takes 100 pictures without flesh and 50 with flesh.
Problems: - sometimes freeze / if change menu before saving, when try to change compact flash card from 4 mb to 8 mb in the case when camera is on - oposite no problems /
- sometimes when try to download freeze the computer.now i reinstal the acdsee.i hope it will no longer no problems.
no others promblems.tech suport via booklet and via web is excelet in the case the camera is no longer on production.
- and is the best news is price.one slovenian company, shift sistem ljubljana sold me camera for unkredable price.
camara was a swow model but takes with camera only few pictures.and another discont was the case camera don t have original baterias in good condicion.
camera was cost 45000 sit or 195 evro.
for that price is no possible to get brand name camera with 1.3 mp.except mustek or jenoptic.but that cameras are realy in bad condition.mustek cameras has very un sharp pictures.and tricks with softwer interpolation.
of course with no rechargebale baterias / one complet for 20 pictures with flash or 30 without / every one user receive bancrot.
with rechargebale baterias are costs almost zero.that is great!
one picture in foto pape cost from 100 - 80 tolars.thas means 43 - 35 cents.
here is another problem.who are don t atach the camera hardware.atach the firmware.
hp 215 suport only up to 32 mb compact flash cards.
Opinion: I bought my camera in October of 2001, and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of pictures it takes and how simple it is to use.
Since most of my picture taking is done indoors, I got an inexpensive AC adapter (not the one recommended by HP that costs 1/3 to 1/2 of the camera price either) and it really saves on batteries. When I do take my camera with me, I use rechargeable batteries and to save them even further I use the AC adapter to download the pictures to my computer, which downloading alone will eat through a lot of batteries.
The macro feature on this camera is great, and I have gotten some really wonderful pictures using it, even in dark rooms.
It is not a camera meant for action shots, and anyone trying to get action pictures from it will be very disappointed. The shutter speed and time between pictures is way too slow for action. However, I have found that by depressing and holding the button just a little (until you hear the first click) it will prepare the camera for the next picture and take it much faster, and you might get a couple of decent action shots even if they aren't the ones you hoped to get.
This is a great camera for beginners or anyone doing still photography!
You can see pictures I have taken with the 215 on my website at: http://twinkletoesmom.tripod.com
ALL the pictures on this site were taken with the 215.
Problems: I found there are no major problems with the camera itself that can't be overcome as long as one adapts the way they take pictures.
One thing that could be a major issue for a lot of people (although I haven't run into with my camera since I haven't had need of it, but have with other HP products and can only assume they are like that with all their products) is that tech support is the worst anyone could ever ask for.
