Opinion: This is a great camera for the office!
I have used Kodak cameras for about seven years, and
of the five different models I have used, I find
durability and simplicity to be their greatest strength. I
think its obvious that buyers choose a Kodak for their
value, so I dont really factor a great price into this.
With exception to only one Kodak model we owned,
all have been a great value. I use this camera for
work, documenting commercial building construction. I
am aware my digital camera needs and expectations
are not typical. I've liked the Z series well enough to
buy one for my wife and my mother.
I have used the Z1485 for about 6 weeks, nearly every
day. I purchased it to replace a worn out Z700 series
Kodak. I selected it because it was bundled with the
KLIC-8000 Li-ion rechargeable battery and charger for
less than $200 at a local Sam's Club. I can get about
200 flash photos on a fully charged battery pack.
Quality has been good, and I am mostly impressed with
the consistency with Kodak's features from past
cameras. It is easy to plug and play with Windows XP
and Vista and download is much faster than my old
Kodaks (download and delete from camera 250 photos
in about 1 minute).
Strengths:
1. Durability, we get years regular weekly use.
2. Flash coverage in low light, powerful flash despite diminutive size.
3. Fits in my jeans pocket.
4. Flash automatically modulated by focal length.
5. Macro focus sharpness and text legibility
6. Predictable focus on tight zoom
7. General picture sharpness is good, see below.
8. The 2 second Self-timer - easy to turn on very
handy when my flash isnt enough in dimly lit spaces.
9. Rechargeable Lithium Ion battery compatible with
my other Kodak's, and generic OEM's of the KLIC-8000
are cheap and easy to find online.
10. Compatible with other rechargeable batteries and AA alkalines you can get anywhere.
Other good features (but not important for my use):
1. Focus tracking is interesting
2. Colors are fantastic.
3. Video recording is impressive.
Problems: My first impression was that it was intolerably soft, but
I learned to work with its focus options, and another
work-around, see below.
Full Auto Mode (Smart Capture) is frustrating,
sometimes I experience blur or softness that doesn't
make sense for the condition. Other times I find it is a
better feature for text mode than the actual scene
mode made for text.
In dimly lit conditions, the auto mode disappointing. I
often just use the Program mode (P on the dial) to set
priority features, and defeat the "Smart Capture".
When I am in a very dark space, I use a small flashlight
momentarily to get it to lock in its focus on what I
need, and then fully depress the shutter button.
When I do this, the pictures are incredible (its dark, so
I already have a flashlight in my other hand).
Opinion: One of the best available small-sized cameras for daily shooting. Have it usually with me. Adorable light and colour rendering.
Opinion: Terrific feature set at an excellent price. Picture quality and zoom are very good and the Panoramic feature is superb. I have been using this camera for almost a year now and love it.
Problems: Low light capability could be better.
Opinion: this is a very interesting camera but pretty disappointing considering the previous posts. To be fair to Kodak, years ago we would have dreamed to get this much quality in such a small package. But in todays standards its just a bit above average in features but the all important picture quality is lacking! I guess there is no great winner lerking out there.. The shell of the camera is just too cheap to expect a quality camera . The results are good but nothing special . The shutter in auto or p mode is too slow in today standards. You can get good shots but I think Sony and Canon still have kodaks number for quality of image. The battery consumption is definitely not an easy fit, needing lithium or some weird not easy to find batteries (think hard again before buying)
Problems: Everything works like it should I guess, but the sensor has a tad too much noise in spite of what kodak says. The camera defaults to too dark too often. If this had a faster shutter and less noise it would be great winner but as it is its a better then average small shooter that just does what its suppose to do. I wonder what this camera would do with a better sensor. HINT KODAK I think people expecting something special here better forget it and think long and hard before giving hard earned money for this
