Opinion: It's kind of tricky to rate this camera in todays' terms.
It's cheap now, so if you want an old cheap digileica then you can choose over this one with the zoom, or the fixed length one.
This one's images look fine and appear quite deep. The colours are great out-of-cam. Sharpness is fine. The cameras' performance is quite good, especially for that era (year 2000). Under-exposing by 0.3 or 0.6 seems to be a good idea when sunlight is around. Flash is good.
I recommend a mild NR-sheen in pp to make the 1.3mp image less obvious. Then after uploading to your FlickR or whatever the resize they do there will have next to no effect on the resolution, the image will look good.
If you do people shots then get them close, as the lack of pixels do not render faces very well if the person is far back in the picture.
Recommended for camera-heads who want to try a digileica on the cheap.
Opinion: I have had the digilux zoom for about 3 years and was quite content with it. After using it for a while you know what you can and especially what you can't do with it. I have taken lots of pictures with it and found it to be a good camera to start with. The macro function with aid of the digital zoom, gives quite good close ups!
Lots of examples are viewable at http://www.student.tue.nl/t/m.p.a.geers/plaatjes_frame.htm
Please note that these aren't the original pictures, but scaled down ones to let dial up internet users give the opportunity to view my pictures also. Just send me an e-mail to get the original picture.
Problems: The 1,3 MP causes close ups to be excellent, but detailed pictures (sceneries, groupphotos, etc.) aren't that good with this camera. (That is, I assume that is because of the, nowadays, low MP count)
Using digital zoom for other purposes then nearby objects, seems pointless.
It also didn't work very well in low-light situations and seemed to be troubled by TL-lamps.
Opinion: I had this camera for over two years and it has served me very well. Shot thousands of pictures with excellent colour rendition.
Leica managed to repackage the rather blaw Fuji design into a real Leica looking quality.
Controls are easy and always work. Wish you would have an updated model.
Problems: It is now obsolete. Hope the new Digilux will serve as well.
Opinion: This is a most superb camera. I have taken over 18 000
images over the past year of travek and adventure to some
very rugged spots. It has been able to with stand hot humid
conditions in Hong Kong night clubs...to the high alpine
wilderness of Tibet and back country treks of mountainess
New Zealand.
Ever faithful...aprt fom the odd shutter jam...always
recharges quickly and effortless download to
PowerBook...for posting on the web.

Problems: Odd human traits...a quick knock or on off switch and it's
back to normal.
Opinion: I have several Leica cameras and expected the same quality from this one, in partcular with the optics. It falls well short. While the outside images are adequate, the inside images leave much to be desired. I bought this for the lens and image quality, and they were no better than average. Other Leica cameras give life to the photo with vibrant colors and sharp forms. This camera didn't even muster this in the outdoors let alone indoors, and the price was much more than your average digital camera.
Problems: I have had problems with the automatic shutter opening and closing at times. The camera does get 'confused' going between program modes.
Opinion: Very good camera.
I would never replace it with another small DC. Small, very easy to use and fantastic image quality. Vivid colours, good AF, easy to use.
Problems: Sometimes the lens cover doesn?t close due to dust. Never had to take it for service though.
Opinion: I used it for the pictures on oursite www.clipperms.nl
Problems: hard to get cabel for the computer
Opinion: Bonjour,
Great, it is always into my shirt's pocket. Easy to handel, great pictures lot of possibilities to make side show. Also I have the accesory to make pictures from slides.
Problems: Night shot: flash not very powerfull
Lens. Dust block it too often. I am now a specialist in opening and cleaning the inside.
Opinion: The first DC I owned that was fairly easy to operate. Bought it from B&H for a fair price.
Ergonomics of the Leica Digilux Zoom is just great and I am always proud to have it with me wherever I go.
Problems: This is not a suitable DC for people with big hands. I am always worried that I will accidentally drop it one day. Guess it would have been better if it came with a neck strap instead of a wrist strap. Shutter started getting sticky after 6 months of use. Mode dial and the zoom control buttons are difficult to clean.
