Opinion: Got this camera since yesterday, shot several items under different lighting situations and couldn't wait to see them on the pc-screen... After using Olympus (C-4000) for about 3 years I decided (untill now I don't know what got in to me at that time) to give Nikon a try, having the knowledge that their optics are worth looking at. The results however were a bit disapointing: pictures taken at sunlight came out sharp (not razorsharp, just sharp), the ones taken under lesser bright lighting situations were just average. Me, buying the camera was based on the info I got from pre-views... on that I read that you could choose the ISO-settings yourself, this is not the case ! The camera does it for you and although for some this is quite ok, for me it is not ! This (and the zoom capability) was one of the reasons I bought this little camera.
Construction is all plastic but doesn't feel cheap at all. Handling may cause a problem for people with large hands, due to the big LCD-screen there is very little space to put the tumb.
The use of penlintes are a blessing, however: the big LCD-screen wears my 2300 mAh batteries out in about 35 minutes of continiously playing with it !
The software that comes with it is rubbisch and I don't intend to use it.
Don't get me wrong, this is a nice little camera that fits nicely into every pocket. If you want to be in charge a little more: don't buy it. I don't know if I'm going to keep this one though...
Problems: none, since I had it for only 2 days.
Opinion: I was very impressed with the features of this camera. Image quality is excellent and the 5X zoom is great. Panorama is a good feature. Better to use Scene mode for indoor rather than auto and there are lots of options in scene mode. A nice feature is being able to set two time zones which is great for travelling. I am very pleased with this camera but it is more suited perhaps to the beginner/novice
Problems: When taking movies, it sounds like a morse code in the audio when the default focus is set (caused by lens autocofusing). Nikon knows about this. Using S-AF is better and morse-code is minimal.
Opinion: I purchased Nikon L1 mainly for the 5x zoom and because I have a few dead pixels on my Cannon S400. Everything about the new camera was just great: great looks, excellent and easy to use menu (even in Russian)!, wonderful 5x zoom, large display with all possible data, nice body and so on.
Problems: There were 2 main problems: lack of focus and excessive power consumption. I downloaded shots of identital objects made by Nikon L1 and my old Canon S400 (which is 2,5 years old) into my PC and carefully compared. Focus, detail and color were substantially better on Canon. Nikon used 2 new Duracell AA batteries after 15 shots with flash. So I returned it to the vendor. Now I'm considering Panasonic DMC-LX1.
Opinion: It's a great digital camera for an average person in this price range, and superb
performance.
The Good:
Simple operation
Excellent photo quality
Long 5X zoom for such a compact package
The bad:
Slow operation
Few manual controls
