The Nikon D300S is a relatively minor update to the D300 - the leading APS-C DSLR of its day. It's based around an updated, video-capable version of the 12MP CMOS sensor used in its predecessor. It offers a very slightly revised control layout and improved continuous shooting rate. The biggest change is the addition of the ability to shoot 720p24 HD movies (MJPEG). Beyond that it retains the rugged build, excellent 51-point AF system and 100% coverage viewfinder that made the D300 such a pleasure to work with. Improvements in sensor technology and Nikon's re-jigging of its lineup mean it is no longer the stand-out camera it once was.

Opinion: Good machine if you like video, if not try with the D300 is just almost the same.
Problems: Not by the moment
Opinion: I sold my D300 for a brand new D300s and I must say that the upgrade from the D300 is minimal. I don't understand why the videoclip feature is limited to 5 min. at 720p.
Canon introduced the 7D with a new 18 megapixel sensor and I believe that Canon takes the crown of better APS-C SRL camera.
Nikon made a big mistake not to change the outdated (three years old) 12 mpx sensor.
In the same market segment Pentax and Sony too have "numerically" bigger and advanced sensors.
I would have chosen to buy the Pentax K7 (a cheaper solution to the D300S, but with the same / if not better performance) but I have too much Nikon lens to re-use.
I'm very disappointed for the minimal step made by Nikon with the D300S.
Opinion: The D300s is a wonderful camera which takes great pictures and is progressively becoming easier to use. I still have a lot to learn. While the body with lens is heavy, I find it steadier handheld than a lighter camera. I have the brand-new Nikkor 18-200mm VRII telephoto zoom lens which produces exceptionally clear images even in JPEG format.
Problems: I am still at wit's end trying to download the latest RAW update for CS4/Windows necessary for the D300s but have been unsuccessful. I cannot find a resource to guide me through installation and am not sure whether Lightroom 2 or Nikon Capture NX (at another extra expense) would be worthwhile. Nikon and/or Adobe need to get it together or they will have yet more unhappy customers.
Opinion: Simply the best crop camera actually available. Low noise, fast FPS, fantastic and
precise AF plus superb flash system.
