Opinion: I like this camera... for me, SLR is one of the most important factors to buy his camera. I have it since 2/99 and I have take more than 600 pictures with it.
I made prints with my Epson Photo EX, and have really good results (Even in 11X8).
Problems: It's a good camera, my only complain is that in low light, the camera is tricky to use (Autofocus).
Opinion: The Oly 1400XL is a good business/keen amateur tool. It has an excellent viewfinder. The flash facilities and low light performance are the biggest limitations. It makes an excellent secondhand purchase. Unless you already have a top rate monitor and printer (and hard drive) these peripherals will limit your results more than this camera.
Problems: The well known difficulty with low light focus. The performance taking group photos at a large formal dinner is only average because of the flash limitations
Opinion: SLR "through the Lens" Viewfinder, 43mm threaded lens - perfect for using addon lenses & filters. No problems swapping batteries & memory cards when used on a tripod. The camera is pretty fast, quick power up and switching from record to play mode and vice versa without huge delays/rebooting. Sequence shooting in full res possible. My 620L performed without any problems for about a year now.
Problems: Low-light focussing is tricky. LCD Display has inferior resolution.
Opinion: C1400XL was my second Olympus Digital, and the SLR feature was the compelling reason I bought it. Compared to the C-820L, this camera had speed and feel of a 35mm camera. Some of my first images are stil at my homepage (http://www.xs4all.nl/~fredfell).
Problems: Low light focusing, cyan overtone.
