Successor to the GR Digital II, the GR Digital III offers a 28mm (equivalent) f/1.9 lens and a new 10MP sensor with larger pixel pitch than its predecessor. It continues the Ricoh tradition of high resolution screens, becoming one of the first compact to offer a 920,000 dots VGA panel. A new imaging engine, in combination with the more sensitive sensor promises to improve high ISO performance. It also gains faster AF and a 'full-press snap' mode that jumps to a preset focus distance for fast street shooting. It can also shoot a burst of up to 5 RAW files in continuous or bracketing mode.

Opinion: I recently acquired the GR Digital III in Tokyo when the came first became available. Having been a fan of the GR Digital II, I was looking forward to seeing the improvements made over the last two years.

While the camera is quite similar to its predecessor, the III certainly outperforms it where it counts the very most - image quality. While maintaining the same amount of pixels, the density has changed, providing for much less noise. In addition, the new image engine seems significantly better in terms of clarity.

Lastly, the new LCD screen is a real gem at 920,000 vs. 230,000 dots. Some new goodies such as dynamic range and more customized menus also make for a better experience. Lastly, the greatly improved RAW write speed, as well as the snap mode make it a true gem for street photography. The black and white images created with this camera are absolutely beautiful.

Problems: Nothing yet - the manual leaves a bit to be desired though. Certainly could use better explanations as this camera is loaded with features and the manual is a bit difficult to follow and vague in places. Hopefully someone will write an experts guide...

Opinion: Extremely high overall resolution (above 95% at the lens centre) when the aperture is fully opened at F1.9. And the level remains high even at the edge of the lens. Super sensitive 10mp CCD with 23cm2 pitch producing very good results at ISO1600. Increase in ISO is double the GRDII. Construction, as with earlier models, excellent. Features now the full PASM and best user interface on any compact. Continuous AF with SNAP setting fast and reliable. Not forgetting the fast F1.9 GR lens !

Problems: Price a bit on the high side. No 40mm coversion lens.

Opinion: The ultimate in high quality, feature rich point and shoot cameras. The GRD III offers
excellent image quality, with a robust and intuitive interface and complete control over
all aspects of imaging. The fixed focal length lens, combined with the compact size
allows for some interesting composition opportunities, and without the burden framing
via zoom provides a liberating experience when street shooting.
Highly recommended for DSLR users looking for something new to reacquaint
themselves with the art of shooting.

Problems: None.
