Opinion: I purchased the RR1 six months ago after tracking down the seemingly last one available in Melbourne, Australia. I initially thought it expensive compared to other 4megapixel camera (I paid Aus$1200), but having said that, I am most impressed with it. I like the style and size of this individual looking camera.
The ease of use is excellent for both the novice and the knowledgable. I'm one of the former, which means I sometimes get out of my depth with the plethora of settings available.
Whenever I use the camera it quickly becomes a talking point of uniqueness and quality.
I am really happy with my choice despite the comments listed below. Well done Ricoh.

Problems: There are three areas to comment on:
a) The battery, which cannot be charged while in the camera ( I would have much preferred this to having to carry around a charger);
b) The shutter speed, which is really slow (If you remain aware of this it's okay!); and,
c) Downloading photographs using the software provided (Smartcard readers and USB ports will overcome this).

Opinion: RR1 is very handy. Have Excellent macro and text features. Good automatic exposure in day light and automatic white balance. The recorded voice is bad if played using on-board speeker or audio output (it is no problem - I bought Caplio as digital camera, no voice recorder). WAV files are ok.

Problems: On the beginning of use - fingerprints on the lens!

Opinion: Please : read to the end. Because myself I'm surprised.... After one
year of RR-1.....

I posted two pics in the photo section. (See RR-1 )
It is picture N° 2443 and N° 2448 I took with this camera.
I know this is not much... but my "little jewel" is "only" a back-up
camera for my (now already old...) Fuji 6900Z.

The camera is a RR-1. This "piece of camera" is with me for more than
8760 hours from now. Oops : I want to say : since I bought it one
year ago I have it with me - day and night- in my pocket, every
moment, every day, and every second again. It has never been more
than one meter away from me since I bougt it.

Neverthelees where I am or what I do. When I'm sweating because of
hot weather or I'm walking in the rain or shivering from the cold.
When I'm on a meeting, in a restaurant or riding with my
mountainbike. It IS with me. All the time. Good times and bad times.

It already had to suffer a lot.... when my jacket is throwed
somewhere on the ground, or the camera is laying on the vibrating
dashboard of the diesl car... etc.... The outside already has some
marks of wear and some dents because of mistreatment.

But the quality of the pictures is still the same as the first day.
I wonder, yes really (And I'm not "connected" with Ricoh in one way
or another.) I wonder why this camera is lacking the commercial
success it deserves. It is a strong tool.

The pictures are good, the lens is sharp, very sharp.
With her "non professional camera look" I make pictures without
people
notice it. And belive me : the results are very naturally.
My "little jewel" (Nicknmame of my RR1) made pictures in heavy rain.
I know it is not good... but I wiped of the rain drops with my
handkerchief every time. (Disclaimer : I never submerged the camera
LOL) Pfwwwww... several times I have tested my RR-1 in the home to
be sure it was still working all right....after mistreatment
(camerawise). Every time this little jewel pleased me.

I was , and still I'm, surprised with the qualities of this camera.
Not only the "heavy duty" structure of the hardware, but with the
quality of the pictures.

I'm also "surpised" because many people are buying snapshot camera's,
where the little RR-1 also does this task and has a lot of potential
when you study the menu carefully, but forget that a "snapshot"
should be "snap" ready in the pocket.

My question : Why I feel alone... with one of the better cameras on
the market ( sorry : in my pocket ) ?

I hope one day (this is a joke...but not really.... ) I drop my Fuji
on a concrete floor to prove my wife I NEED a DSLR camera. But I
never want to say farewell to my little jewel.

Please Ricoh : Take better care of your marketing. You should take
better care to sell more RR-1's. A lot of people will be very happy
with it. It hasn't the look of a "real" camera but it is a real good
camera. And this "non camera look" is the best opportunity to make
the real "life" pictures.

Please Ricoh : help the people to have a good tool to make,
professional, pictures.

PS : Thank you Ricoh.

Kind regards

Skitch

Opinion: I have always used an SLR before now, but after using the Caplio RR1 I shall be putting the SLR away. Magnificent photos! Macro facility wonderful. I have many old colour slides and was thinking of buying a slide scanner, but decided to try a light box and the new camera. The results are stunning and far cheaper than buying a new scanner.
I have also copied old B&W negatives to great effect.
I now take more photos than before. so more chance of getting some GREAT shots.

Problems: Should have an automatic lens cover as fingerprints can be a problem.
Slowness of transfer via the camera to computer.
Slowness of photos appearing on screen.
Battery life

Opinion: I have had this camera for about a week now and I have just about figured out all its features. There is an awful lot to get through and the manual is over 100 pages. Having said that the benefits of spending time getting to know the camera have paid off and I have obtained some absolutely stunning photos.

I have been absolutely blown away with the macro function which I have never seen bettered in any format it is out of this world !!! I have produced some studio quality pictures after just a couple of days. The images contained more detail than I can see with the naked eye without the camera.

I bought the camera with two purposes in mind. The first was to enable me to photo my plants close up which I am more than satisfied with and the second was to use the camera as a family camera so it had to be simple enough for my wife to use. After thoroughly reading the manual I was able to take excellent photos of the wife and kids. Read below though.

All in all I would highly recommend this camera as it does all I want it to and very well too.

Finally the proof is in the photos so check out the pictures I have taken with this camera.

Problems: Initially I had difficulty getting good photos of my children from the camera. I obtained advice form the shop where I bought it as I am a novice photographer. The problem was that the defaults on the camera were set to flash off which sets a slow shutter speed hence blurred pictures of children. Once auto flash is selected no problem as a faster shutter speed is selected. I have since found out the the user can set their own defaults so that this doesn't occur again by accident. My advice is to read the manual thoroughly and to ask lots of questions from the experts in the shop where it is purchased if you are not an expert.

Opinion: I find this camera brilliant to use. from the well written users book to the short video clips. I have no idea what value for money means in a play thing.I did a lot of research before buying and could not be happier with the camera.

Problems: no problems at all with the camera. bought a spare battery and instal my software wherever i can.

Opinion: Small, light and handy but very poor ergonomics. Why do they insist on making them so smooth and slippery. Also,it is difficult to depress shutter and hold still. Carry in pocket and it will easily be scratched or lost.Pictures are typical of any good 2.1 mpx camera.Better is available.
Great if size is most important. Will return it soon.

Problems: I dropped it 4 times into my lap while reading instructions.Had to put wrist strap on to make sure I would not drop it onto floor.Bet a lot get damaged.

Opinion: Excellent combination of features for nearly all levels of photography. Great size and weight. Like others have said, you willl want to but multiple 129 Mg cards, second battery, AC adapter, and remote control.

Problems: Problem was rapidly remedied by Fry's - excellent vendor!!
