Opinion: I've really enjoyed using this camera for the past 6 months. The HX20 rarely takes a bad picture. It's a nice size, and not quite pocketable. I love the 3" LCD - it provides a nice, vibrant image and visible on bright days.
Movies are of decent quality. Battery life is decent; I would advise buying an extra battery, since it takes about 4 hours to completely recharge.
Problems: The lens cap is bothersome at times, but I've gotten used to it.
Opinion: great camera' the only thing that bothers is the lens cover.
Opinion: the sharpest photos I ever saw from a camera period. Maybe too sharp Maybe even too sharp but I have changed mymin. If this had a tad less noise and bigger sensor it would be the best selling camera of all time. Sonys cheap sesors are horrible! This is a sony quality camera that takes exceptional real looking shots outside. telephoto shots outstanding, I would give it 4.5 outside image quality only because of noise
Problems: its a very tad noisy , outside its good, not great, inside wide angle its a bit lousy. I think after trying this and the H55 I am trying a different camera maker. Sony better do something about the tiny cheap sensors they use
Opinion: its the best camera in this range. if one can't take superb
pictures, it's his/her fault. because its picture quality are
excellent
Problems: the chamber for battery is a little bit weak
Opinion: Its my first sony and its a fantastic compact camera, image quality is great. HD Movie mode with zoom is outstanding. The H20 is great value for money. I use the Sony H20 instead of my Canon DSLR when I want to travel light, it will never be as good as my DSLR, but hey its a compact camera that packs a good punch, well done Sony
Problems: Unfortunately no Optical View finder and the lens cap is a nuisance
Opinion: Love this little gem.
My beloved H5 gave up the ghost and I had to
begrudgedly find a replacement as my knockaround
camera. I love my DLSR but many times for social
events, or travel opps where you want to stay in the
moment and not worry about always protecting your
DLSR gear, I need a knockaround.
My H5 took some stunning pics and I was worried that
1- Sony didn't have many like minded current
replacements ( the HX1 had mixed reviews and too
pricey for what you get and the mixed reviews) and
2- the smaller glass and 3- higher mp/cm2.
I didn't expect much but boy was I surprised. I have
squeaked out some lovely shots and experimented in a
mall last night without using flash with results that the
H5 would not have had. I took video in the mall of a
light show and while the video will not compare to my
legacy Sony HDR-HC1 HDV cam, to the non critical
person, you would be VERY surprised ( providing you
had steady hands and mastered the slow "non-jerky"
pan ).
In short, I have not taken it for a total spin, however I
am shocked with how much I have taken to this little
puppy. So far, my feelings are that I have many of the
benefits of my H5 but in a much smaller footprint and
first impressions tell me that I have a much greater low
light advantage over the H5 ( but don't expect
unrealistic miracles and play with the settings such us
+.7ove and sports mode for low light ).
There are sexier cameras out there but for the price
and the results, I couldn't be happier. I liked the
aesthetics ( and the marketing) of the Panasonic much
better and wanted to switch and try another brand,
but after my own due diligence, I always gravitate to
results first and "for me", I am very happy with my
choice.
One last thing that should be noted, some of Sony's
evf screens are drop dead gorgeous. Having a bright
and tack sharp screen should not be underestimated
for assessing the quality of your shot. I frequently ( to
the extent of obsessively ) zoom in to preview my
shots for pixel grain/sharpness etc and you will not find
a better looking screen than the one found on the
H20.
Problems: Focus was a little slow but greatly improved switching
to spot focus. I would still like to see quicker focusing
but not problematic.
People complained about the cap, I looped the cap
cord through one of the built in eye hooks and
problem solved, for me.
I'm impatient and as such, start up could be faster but
my belief is that all pocket long zooms take that short
bit of extra time - which seems endless when trying to
take a very quick opportunistic shot.
As I use the camera more, I will post a follow up if I
encounter niggles that should be noted.
Opinion: i did not like 1 pictures of 50 i did.
return !
also most pics come out blurr and noise
Problems: bad camera
Opinion: In my opinion, the main and most important advantage of this camera is the excellent image quality, that compets directly many SLRs, when it is set at ISO 80-100-200.
The pleasant image quality remains at all the zoom range.
H20 is also fast responding, well constructed, pocketable.
Problems: the ideal camera: sony H20, with optical viewfinder, powered by 2 or 4 AA batteries !
Opinion: Fast autofocus, well constructed, portable size for a 10x
optical zoom with a long telephoto, zoom works in video
mode and is very smooth, good low light photos, superb
macro pictures, powerful flash, manual mode, excellent
720p video quality in good light, autofocus works well in
videos, good battery life, very good image stabilization
that works even in telephoto mode, extended zoom very
useful
Problems: Lens cap is a nuisance, slow flash recycle time, shutter lag
impeding rapid shots, low light video not impressive, zoom
very slow in video mode
