9.1 megapixels | 3" screen | 28 – 560 mm (20×)

Latest in a long line of big-zoom, SLR-styled compacts is the first of a new generation of non-SLR models to feature the company's newly-developed high-speed 9 Mp Exmor CMOS sensor. Sporting a 28-560mm (35mm-equivalent) 20x zoom lens, the DSC-HX1 is capable of up to 10 frames per second in burst mode using a high-speed mechanical shutter. The new sensor also enables high definition movie capture up to 1080/30p and some novel features such as 'sweep panoramas' and multi-shot stacking low light modes. The image quality is decent enough in good light, but there are better, and given the price you have to really want those cool features to choose the HX1 over some of its considerably cheaper competitors.

Opinion: Sony is again lagging behind its competitions - the zoom should have been 24-26x.

Opinion: Just bought DSC HX1, as I wanted a really good Still
(SLR) camera with decent video capabilities. Optical
Zoom is good for 20X. Features are user friendly with
help integrated for each operation. But the features
dont provide that better performance, like the
Twilight or taking images of fast moving objects.
Camera is feature rich and user friendly, but features
dont provide good performance. My excitement for
the new camera (said to be DSLR) wanned off when I
saw the Picture quality (in Intelligent mode and Easy
mode) was poorer than my ordinary Nikon Coolpix
camera would be 1/5th of the price of DSC HX1. The
clarity and details in pictures were inferior compared to
Nikon Coolpix LS. The Video quality was good. I am
going to explore this camera bit more.. before
returning it back for Canon EOS 500D.

Problems: The picture is grainy.
