Opinion: Having used the TX1 for the past 4 months, I was quite disappointed when I got this camera. Just about every spec sheet I've looked at on the internet including dpreview said this camera has a manual focus option. Well, it doesn't... Manual focus is a very important feature for me since I use the camera mostly to take pictures in very low light environments where auto focus often fails, which is the problem I had the most with my TX1. Don't get me wrong, it's an excellent camera and the AVCHD video quality is amazing for such a small camera, but to me it's definitely not much of an upgrade to the TX1. If the higher quality, full 1080 video is what you're looking for then this is a great alternative to a full sized flash memory or hard drive camcorder.
Problems: Not having manual focus is really the only complaint I have with the camera, everything else is excellent! ....oh, one other thing. They really condiser this dark blue? You need to look at the camera in direct sunlight to see any blue at all in the finish!
Opinion: PRO
excellent pictures.
excellent High Dynamic Range results.
excellent low-light pictures due to the EXMOR-R sensor.
excellent automatic panoramas.
nice and compact layout
Problems: CONTRA
Many functions remain a mystery and unused due to the 170 pages pdf handbook on the CD only. You can't read it on the couch or before going to sleep.
Shaky controls, you tend to press the camera down when releasing the shutter.
Battery can't be charged with the camera in dock.
Opinion: Own this camera for two months now and I'm still delighted with it every day. It takes great pictures automatically, the 1080i movie mode is excellent and the high resolution touch screen is gorgeous. No SLR replacement but really a photo/video camera you can take anywhere for the occasion and snap great pictures and video's without fuzz.
Problems: No problems encountered but things that could improve:
- it is too easy to put your finger before the lens
- since the sensor is more sensitive it also is easier overexposed
- battery life when shooting video is less than an hour
- dock is required for download
- you will need a HD screen with HDMI or new computer with HD accelerated graphics to watch your video's
Opinion: * very good Intelligent Auto mode pictures
* face detection mode
* great HD video mode with zoom
* supports SD and MS cards
* compact form factor
Problems: * needs two handed operation to avoid slippage, shake
* zoom control not smooth to operate
* cannot release shutter using touch screen
* no Aperture priority, Shutter priority, Manual modes
* Intelligent Pantilter accessory is novel but very limited range and lacks settings
