The A850 is, next to the flagship DSLR A900, Sony's second full-frame digital camera. The two only noticeable differences in specification between the cameras is a slightly smaller viewfinder and a smaller buffer, resulting in slower continuous shooting, on the A850. With its tank-like build quality, intuitive user-interface and excellent handling the A850 is, despite (or rather because) of the lack of some 'digital' features such as live view or a movie mode, a no-nonsense photographers' camera that delivers excellent image quality at base ISO but cannot quite keep up with the competition at higher sensitivities.
Wildlife and sports photographers would almost certainly prefer better low light performance, faster continuous shooting and autofocus but for resolution-hungry applications in good light, such as landscape or studio photography, the A850 is a more than valid option. This is especially true for those photographers who operate on a tighter budget but do not want to do without the full-frame format.

Opinion: I have been a Nikon user for at least 35 years - both film and digital. I have also seen other cameras' prints and quality in my many years as a student and a pro. recently, I purchased Sony's a850 and all I can say that I just can not put the camera down. The image quality is fantastic. I use it strictly with a 135mm Sonnar ZA 1.8 Carl Zeiss for my senior photography. All I can say is that there is nothing like it.
Opinion: It's a $1700 full frame DSLR. 24MP, huge viewfinder, excellent AF especially after the firmware update (which also alleviated at least 2 of the complaints below this review), and the dynamic range is a delight to work with in post processing. Works seamlessly with flash. Every AF lens stabilized. Just a delight to own.
Problems: It's not as fast as current top of the line DSLRs, in regards to ISO or frames per second. A completely useable, but not ideal, sports/action camera.
