Opinion: I have owned this camera for over 2 years. I am still learning about its features. I have found that it is almost indestructable as I use it on board a sail boat and have dropped it several times. It still works very well. The features are hard to find and I found the most people have a hard time figuring the camera out because it is not intuitive. The number of pictures per chip is outstanding. I am averaging between 2 and 3 hundred k per picture but find that the resolution seems to be confined by my monitor rather than the jpeg. Also battery life is very underestamated as I can get over 120 pictures per charge. Sometimes more. I like the camera and it has become my favorite.
Problems: It takes time for the camera to record a picture which I find annoying. About 1 sec to 2 sec. Also the dial which determines which mode you are in gets turned easily so you have to check the camera before lining up to shoot or it won't work. Also the batteries are hard to find. Several stores that carry the camera do not carry the batteries. I have two which I bought shortly after I bought the camera and they are still good after 2 years. Use a card reader as the serial port is unbelievably slow.
Opinion: I have owned my Toshiba PDR-M3 for almost 3 years. I still believe that it was a very good purchace. The camera is well constructed, and the layout of controls is very friendly. I have used the camera mostly in the Auto mode, and have not challenged it throughout its' manual mode features. The PDR-M3 takes great pictures indoors and out. It seems to prefer using the built in flash even in outdoor pictures, which works fine for fill flash. The 5 flash modes offer advantages over the common point and click cameras that went to market when this one did.
The cameras autofocus has been most acceptable even in low lit indoor photography.
The rechargable Li battery has stood up well and logically hold good charge longer when not using the LCD as a view finder. I like the optical view finder which zooms with the lens when composing a shot.
I like the camera alot, and have found that I do not need to use image software to tweek the pictures to maintain good colors. However, the included image software is very good and holds many features for those who wish to change their pictures attributes.
Problems: Slow boot up time, 2 seconds between shot recover time. The serial download is slow. Not serious problems as I can live with it, but it is not quite the same as SLR for action.
