More comparison to the S1 Pro

Just to get away from my typical 'bottles scene' for a minute, and just for further comparison, I've taken two more comparison shots with the D1x and S1 Pro. Both using the same 28-105 mm lens, both at ISO 320, both shot from the same tripod and same subject distance just a few seconds between each shot.

Nikon D1x vs. Fujifilm S1 Pro (both at 6 megapixels)

Lenses used: D1x (Nikkor 28-105mm F3.5-4.5 @ 98 mm) / S1 Pro (Nikkor 28-105mm F3.5-4.5 @ 91 mm)

Apart from the slight difference in white balance the overall colour and exposure of the two shots is quite simialar. Resolution wise the D1x is definetly pulling more detail out of the shot, and more noticeable is that the D1x image seems more 'natural', at 1:1 the S1 Pro image looks a little too 'processed'. Also visible in the last two S1 Pro crops is the (infamous) "hair moire", which is clear and strong on the corner of the eye glasses.

Once more the D1x produces the more pleasing 'film like' image, lots of detail, good colour balance and less visible noise than the S1 Pro. That said the S1 Pro really does perform very well for a digital SLR costing about half as much as the D1x.

Obviously the Fujifilm S1 Pro and Nikon D1x are two very different beasts aimed at different parts of the market. It can be argued that this is like comparing apples and oranges. The D1x has a strong robust case, faster operation, a better metering system, support for all Nikon lenses and a true six megapixel resolution. The D1x is the kind of camera that could go almost anywhere and shoot in even the most hostile of environments. The S1 Pro is more of a studio camera.
